Both swords have live ( very sharp ) blades and are extremely effective in cutting exercises. I have used the wakizashi in cutting a full roll goza mat and can personally vouch for its cutting ability.

This diagram makes the comparison between the standard katana and the SGC katana blade geometry. Clearly a more effective cutting edge with the use of modern metals.

The daisho set consists of two swords, the katana ( Dai-Big ) and the wakizashi ( Sho-Small ). The wakizashi being the smaller sword has 30.5″ blade and shares all the characteristics of the SGC katana.
